Staff Attorney - General Claims

West Trenton, NJ

Our General Claims Legal Department is seeking an attorney with a minimum of 4 years of relevant experience in handling New Jersey and Pennsylvania general insurance defense work, principally related to auto accident and premises liability issues.

Job Responsibilities

  • Supervise the handling of insurance defense litigation.

  • Develop and implement litigation strategy with outside defense counsel.

  • Assist General Claims staff with coverage and other miscellaneous claims questions, regulatory complaints, fraud investigations, etc.

  • Prepare summaries for General Claims staff of legal developments; e.g., case law, statutory and regulatory updates.

Job Requirements 

  • JD and admission to NJ Bar required

  • 4-7 years of experience handling NJ general insurance defense work

  • Must have exceptional verbal and written communication skills and time management skills

  • Must be decisive and have strong organizational skills

  • Some coverage work, trial and arbitration experience is preferred and a judicial clerkship is beneficial

Job Responsibilities:

  • Protect the interests of NJM assureds in all litigated matters through preparation of the file, including legal research and utilization of resources available.

  • Provide assertive and aggressive defense of formal claims in various Workers’ Compensation venues on a regular basis.

  • Represent NJM in court and cover courts from Newark to Mount Holly and possibly other areas as needed.

  • Maintain communications with the assured during the formal adjudicatory process.

Job Requirements:

  • Must be currently licensed to practice law in NJ

  • Analytical ability and strong attention to detail

  • Team-oriented and also able to work well independently

  • Familiarity with personal injury and workers’ compensation insurance a plus

  • Excellent negotiation, communication and writing skills

  • Some trial or arbitration experience is preferred; a judicial clerkship is beneficial.

  • Ability to travel within the state and cover multiple counties.

  • Computer skills including Microsoft Office and Outlook
